Observing Femtosecond Fragmentation Using Ultrafast X-ray-Induced Auger Spectra
Molecules often fragment after photoionization in the gas phase. Usually, this process can only be investigated spectroscopically as long as there exists electron correlation between the photofragments. Important parameters, like their kinetic energy after separation, cannot be investigated. We are reporting on a femtosecond time-resolved Auger electron spectroscopy study concerning the photofr...
متن کاملFemtosecond X-ray-induced explosion of C60 at extreme intensity.
Understanding molecular femtosecond dynamics under intense X-ray exposure is critical to progress in biomolecular imaging and matter under extreme conditions. Imaging viruses and proteins at an atomic spatial scale and on the time scale of atomic motion requires rigorous, quantitative understanding of dynamical effects of intense X-ray exposure. Here we present an experimental and theoretical s...

متن کاملMolecular structures from femtosecond x-ray pulses.
I this issue of PNAS Miao, Hodgson, and Sayre (1) validate a method of three-dimensional structure determination for individual biological macromolecules. Their proposal, based on suggestions by Hajdu and colleagues (2), is supported by careful computer simulation using plausible assumptions, and rests on recent advances in a number of related fields. In brief, they adopt the idea that femtosec...
متن کاملFemtosecond X-ray Pulses from a Synchrotron
An important frontier in ultrafast science is the application of femtosecond x-ray pulses to the study of structural dynamics in condensed matter. We show that femtosecond laser pulses can be used to generate high-brightness, tunable, femtosecond x-ray pulses from a synchrotron. Performance of existing and proposed femtosecond x-ray beamlines at the Advanced Light Source synchrotron are discussed.
